Open Burning
The
DuPage County Division of Regulatory Services reminds citizens that
burning leaves and other landscape waste in unincorporated DuPage County is not
allowed under a County ordinance passed in 1990.
The ordinance was adopted to protect the health, welfare and safety of
DuPage County residents as well as to maintain acceptable ambient air quality.
Residents are prohibited from burning landscape waste such as leaves,
shrub and grass clippings and tree limbs. To
properly dispose of your landscape waste, contact your local municipality or
township and ask about their brush pickup program.
Exceptions to the ordinance including recreational burning such as
barbecues, campfires and fire pits are allowed provided only clean, dry firewood
is burned. Additionally, special event bonfires may require approval
from your local fire department. Open
burning is considered a petty offense punishable by a fine between $100 and
$500. To report violations of
DuPage County's ordinance please call 911.
Darien
City Code Ordinance
7-1-9A prohibits the burning of garbage, rubbish or natural refuse.
Natural refuse includes, but is not limited to, leaves and other yard
wastes anywhere within the City. However,
logs, non-treated wood, or wood products may be burned in either an indoor or
outdoor fireplace (a structure which partially encloses a fire to contain its
size), and of course charcoal may be burned in charcoal grills.
In
Woodridge, any burning of leaves is also strictly prohibited.
