What
happens if you are injured and could not communicate with emergency workers?
How will police, firefighters, or paramedics reach your family or an
emergency contact? Do you have a
cell phone? The Darien-Woodridge
Fire Protection District is encouraging residents to use a new cell phone
program called “ICE”. “ICE”
stands for “In Case of Emergency”.
The program is designed so that individuals will record emergency
contacts under the acronym “ICE” in the address book of their cell phone.
The
goal is that your emergency contact would not only be the person you would want
contacted, but also someone who could provide your medical history so that
appropriate care could be given. Be
assured that if a life threatening illness or injury were occurring, you would
be treated first while someone else attempted to find your “ICE” contact.
There can be multiple entries for any cell phone user.
For example, children and teens can use ICE-Mom and/or ICE-Dad.
Some
other things to consider: Make sure
the person you use for your ICE contact agrees to do this.
Give your ICE contact a list of people that you would want notified.
Inform your ICE contact of any medical conditions that you have including
allergies and current medications. If
you are under 18 make sure that your contact is a parent or legal guardian
authorized to make decisions on your behalf.
