Award of Merit

Award of Merit is presented to any active member of the Fire District who has performed an act of unusual character requiring initiative or ability worthy of special recognition.  The Award of Merit was presented to Lt. John Tabisz for his actions in June 2007.  While at a family function a relative started choking and John went to her aid.  After three attempts of the Heimlich maneuver he was successful in expelling a piece of food.  His quick action prevented a happy family occasion from turning into a saddening experience.

Lifesaving Award

Lifesaving Award is to be presented in those cases where a human life is saved by another person or persons.  The Lifesaving Award was presented to Firefighter James Hobbs for his actions on May 28, 2007.  While off-duty he rescued a woman who was sound asleep while her home was filling up with smoke from burnt food on the stove.  After hearing the smoke detector from the home and seeing smoke in the residence he forced entry, found the source of the smoke and turned off the stove.  He then did a search of the home and found the women asleep on the couch.  It took several attempts to wake her up and then he was able to remove her from the home.  His quick actions prevented a tragedy and saved a women’s life.

Employee of The Year

Employee of the Year is to be presented to any active member of the Fire District who has exceeded the expectations of their fellow employees.  Nominations for this award are made by fellow employees and to be considered for this award, an employee must have demonstrated outstanding merit and/or performance throughout the previous year.  We expressed our sincere appreciation to Fire Prevention Bureau Director Robert Morris.  He was recognized for his performance and dedication to the Darien-Woodridge Fire Protection District.  His ability to continually go above and beyond in the performance of his duties and his dedication to the District and the residents we serve is to be commended and respected by all.
